Indiana Dunes National Park

Indiana Dunes National Park, formerly known as Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, is our country’s newest and 61st National Park, having gained the new designation in February of 2019.   The dunes at this park looked like they belonged to beaches along the coast, It was a little strange to not smell the expected salt air we are used to in this kind of setting, too.

Of course we hit the beaches, which were beautiful and quite peaceful in the off season.  It was easy to imagine how packed this park would be in the heat of the summer.

Of the miles and miles of dunes and beaches to explore in the park, one of our favorite spots was the old lighthouse, which has been undergoing a great restoration effort.  The shoreline around the lighthouse has also been getting attention, with new bulkheads and other projects to keep the lake from eroding any further.  It was pretty hazy at the lighthouse, but we could tell the fall sun was burning off the clouds and fog, and we’d soon have another sunny day to enjoy.
