Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortuga National Park

Happy New Year!  We spent the first day of 2020 enjoying a delicious lunch with cousins, followed by a hunt for shark teeth on the beach.  Alas, no teeth were found, but it was a fabulous way to start the year.

FYI:  The timing of articles has been and will continue to be a bit goofy for a bit due to a variety of technical challenges. Until we have a reliable solution, our publishing frequency will be significantly reduced.

Of course we are still having fun.  Last month we made the trip out to Dry Tortuga National Park.  We enjoyed a lovely breakfast on the ferry from Key West to the park, which was bigger and more beautiful than we expected.

We were lucky to have a tour guide who had a real passion for his job and the site.  (We’ve had one like this before, at Hearts Castle).  Listening to someone who is passionate about their job and sharing their knowledge is the best.  Their enthusiasm is infectious.  We followed our guide for two tours around the fort.

As we listened to the history of this place, we were in awe of what was built in the middle of nowhere, especially since all supplies had to be brought in on slow wooden sailing ships.  Everything was essentially done by hand.  Yes, it is a gorgeous location, but  back when there was no shade, and no fresh water, it was far from a tropical paradise.

After our tour, we explored on our own before enjoying a lunch onboard the air conditioned ferry.  It was a fabulous day, and anyone making a trip to the Keys should make sure to add this to their itinerary.  Book it before you get to Florida, as both ferries and sea planes fill up quickly.
