New York was a fun state. We looped through twice, once on the way up to Maine, and again after working our way down the coast. First up on this loop was Niagara falls. What started out as a gloomy day quickly became bright and beautiful. Although the closer you get to the falls, no matter by boat or viewing area, you’re gonna get wet. This is one of the few photos where we don’t look like we took a shower in our clothes.

The falls are also incredibly loud. You can hear them long before you see them. You can also feel the mist from the falls for quite a distance, too. After grabbing a bite to eat where we could watch tour boats doing the falls loop, we wrapped up our day.
On our way to Maine, we stopped to tour Boldt Castle. There is a heartbreaking backstory to this home. George Boldt set out to build the castle on heart island as a gift for his wife. The story is that he planned to present the gift on valentine’s day. Sadly, she passed away suddenly and he halted all construction work immediately. She never received her gift, and he never lived in the home. In fact, he never returned to the island. The buildings that are on the island now have been undergoing restoration and construction completed based on his detailed plans. Many of the materials were still available, having never been unpacked. It was cool to see such a home and imagine those who could’ve lived there.

Jumping ahead to our next loop of New York, we found a great RV campground across the Hudson from Manhattan. We were just a few blocks from different ferries that could take us to different spots on the New York side of the river, and we were a short drive to the Statue of Liberty ferry. It wasn’t fancy to look at, but we had access to so much, and the price was right.
We certainly got our daily walks in. Even utilizing the subway system, our feet were worn out at the end of each day. We had so much fun exploring and being tourists. We had a delicious lunch at Katz’s deli, and had our first half sour pickles.
We enjoyed a nice stroll through central park, got in some excellent people watching in times square, and watched ice skaters at Rockefeller Center. We found a street fair with food vendors from all over, and sampled more good food than one should try to eat in a single day.
We even got to fan boy and girl at some of the “MIB buildings”. At the end of every day, we’d pretty much collapse into bed. Exhausted, exhilarated, and ready to do it again the next day.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral may be my favorite building in New York. It was simply breathtaking no matter where we stood to admire it.

All in all, we absolutely loved New York, and we look forward to a return trip.
