Some parks make you work for it if you want to see them. Isle Royale National Park is only accessible by boat or seaplane. The boat sounded fun, but would take hours to get to our destination, and require two nights on the island. We found an option where we could fly in and out the same day, with plenty of time to explore in between.

We took off on a very grey and very cold day. The view was amazing, and we were glad we were going to arrive in time to enjoy a hot lunch before we explored the island.

The rangers told us there were thousands of moose on the island, as well as wolves, which help control their numbers. Over the years, the numbers of each have fluctuated, and they have been studying them for decades. Sadly, we didn’t see either creature on our walk, but we loved the walk through the woods and along the shore, even found a little cave, too.

There were signs posted at trailheads, near campgrounds, and at the hotel informing travelers that they had to be ready to leave a day early, due to an expected storm system. Some of the weather was already causing problems, delaying flights back to the mainland.

As luck would have it, the delayed flights were leaving an hour or so before our scheduled flight, and they had room for us, too. We had one of the planes to ourselves, which was a blast. The crew was happy we were able to join an earlier flight, because they weren’t sure if our original flight would’ve been able to leave at all, let alone on time.
