Great Sand Dunes National Park & White Sands National Monument

More of New Mexico, this time, we were working our way back into the national park system.  First stop, Great Sand Dunes National Park.  The dunes were huge, and it was an amazing sight to see with snow-capped mountains in the back ground.

Our vehicle was not allowed on the primitive 4wd roads, so we were limited to what we could see from our campground and how far we could walk into the dunes before some nasty weather caught up with us.

Our next stop was at White Sands National Monument.  There was a great road that snaked through the dunes, and the sand was such a bright white, we felt like we were driving over a freshly plowed, snowy road.

The weather cooperated with us, giving us vivid blue skies and bright sunshine.  I rented a sled at the visitor’s center and got some sledding in, too.  I’ve decided sledding is a lot more fun when you don’t have to bundle up and worry about snow getting in your jacket.
