Olympic National Park is near and dear to our hearts, as it is where we went on one of our first camping trips ‘back in the day’. We returned to Sol Duc for a little stroll down memory lane.

We noticed something different about how this park manages their campsites, and really wish more parks followed their lead. With no ranger to check people in, they had a self-service board that shows which sites were reserved, which had been claimed for the day, and what was still available. We rarely make reservations because we don’t have a solid schedule. It was awesome to be able to go straight to an available site instead of circling the loops forever.
After settling into our spot, we decided to go for a walk. The list of local trails said that the falls were less than a mile from the trail head. We thought that meant the one on our campground. According to our fitness trackers, we walked over 9 miles that day. We also learned that cute gym shoes do not make good trekking through woods shoes, and the result is bloody toes.
Was the walk worth it? Absolutely. The falls were beautiful, and while long, the walk was amazing.
We have since learned how to read trail maps more carefully, and invested in better shoes. (They aren’t as cute)

Every day is a new opportunity to learn something new. On this trip, we also learned that the freezer in our little Dometic works so well, that it can freeze items in the fridge. Sadly, 10 frozen eggs meant granola bars for breakfast.

Happily, their explosions were contained in the egg carton.
