California Beaches

Heading south along the California coast, we stumbled upon some roadside waterfront camping at the Rincon Parkway Campground near Faria Beach.  The amenities were limited, with just a port-a-potty, but the view more than made up for it.

It seemed to be a pretty popular camping area, with all available spaces vanishing within an hour of when we selected our spot.  So many of the California campgrounds require reservations, and are fully booked months in advance, making this ‘walk in’ location very appealing.

Over the next few days, we continued south, stopping at various beaches along the way.  We were impressed with the beautiful beaches in Malibu, and surprised at the changes in Venice Beach, where we enjoyed a tasty lunch while appreciating some local art.

Our destination was the Long Beach area, so we could visit family and friends in the area.  We were excited to learn that there was a pirate festival scheduled during the same time we’d be in the area.  It was a beautiful weekend, and good, clean, pirate fun was had by all!

Unfortunately, Long Beach is also where we discovered the frame of the camper cracked.  We realized it must have happened when we were in Morrow Bay, and we were jostled pretty strongly crossing an intersection with serious drainage features.

Of course we had all the tools we needed to fix the camper, but they were up in Washington.  So we looked for a repair shop that could help us, and learned that the frame cracked due to water damage that weakened the structure.  Their advice was to take our home to a dump and get a new one.  Talk about stressful and heartbreaking!

We didn’t see evidence of water damage when we purchased the camper, and didn’t even know where to look for anything like that.  The repair shop helped us secure the camper so we could continue our journey long enough to get back to Washington and our own tools.  We would rather fix our tiny home than replace it.
